• U.S. agriculture, a critical industry: On Thursday, March 19, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued guidance on the critical industry workforce that must keep working as the country addresses and responds to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. U.S. food and agriculture were included among 16 critical industries.
• Food does not spread the virus: Purdue University’s Department of Food Science told consumers not to let fear of the COVID-19 coronavirus keep them from eating fresh fruits and vegetables. Right now, fear of COVID-19 should not be a reason to stop buying fresh fruits and vegetables.
• There will be a labor shortage: There is uncertainty, and information is discouraging the workforce. For example, the UK government is limiting operational staff to curb the spread of the virus.
The reality is that, given the crisis we are going through, demand for fresh food will grow enormously, surpassing any projection made before the current situation. This will drastically change consumption habits, as people will be much more mindful of their diet: “Incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables into the diet has been shown to consistently improve overall health, including the immune system,” according to the Purdue University statement. “Staying healthy increases the body’s ability to fight infections.”
