POTHU®️ SQ square pots: total stability for your blueberry factory

The real problem in the field: tipped-over plants, stress and losses

In modern agriculture, weather is one of the main risk factors. Every blueberry grower knows what it means to wake up after a night of strong winds and find dozens or even hundreds of tipped-over plants.

This is not just an operational inconvenience:

  • A blueberry plant is a living organism in full development; when it tips over, its root system suffers extreme stress that can affect its growth, reduce its productivity and even cause plant death.
  • The stress is not only on the plant: agronomy teams go into contingency mode, losing time and resources lifting plants instead of focusing on high-value agronomic work.
  • In the medium term, these incidents disrupt 3–5-year production plans, since an unstable crop cannot reach its full potential or guarantee the projected profitability.

That is why what the modern grower seeks is not simply to produce more, but to eliminate risk variables that could compromise their investment. And one of those critical variables is plant stability in the field.

The global trend: square pots as the solution

International experience has shown that the pot system is the most efficient way to achieve uniformity and standardization, coming as close as possible to a blueberry factory.

Along the way, one of the most important changes in recent years has been the shift from traditional round pots to square pots, ranging from 30 to 40 liters, which offer clear advantages:

  • Greater structural stability:
    • In comparative trials, a 33 L square pot withstands wind gusts 20–25% stronger before tipping over than a round pot of the same volume.
    • In fields in Peru and Mexico, growers report much greater stability and, above all, crop uniformity.
  • Geometry that resists lateral force:
    • The square shape offers 4 axes of resistance, which reduces the tendency to pivot.
    • The round pot, on the other hand, acts like a “roller,” making it much more likely to rotate and fall.
  • Greater substrate volume:
    • New premium blueberry varieties (more vigorous, larger and with expansive roots) need to go from the traditional 25–27 L to 30–40 L to express their full productive potential.
  • Easier installation:
    • With the SQ system (custom-sized substrate block, hydrated inside the pot), growers can hydrate a substrate block directly inside the pot, saving time and standardizing filling.

 DIDIHU POTHU®️ SQ models

At DIDIHU, we respond to these real grower needs with field-proven solutions:

Both models have been designed to provide robustness, uniformity and peace of mind to growers seeking stability in their fields.

 Advantages that make a difference

  • Faster, more practical installation in rows.
  • Plants that stay firm and stable throughout the entire cycle, even in regions with winds above 40–50 km/h.
  • Lower risk of tipping over and therefore lower plant mortality.
  • Better-oxygenated roots, with healthier, more vigorous development.
  • Efficient drainage, preventing moisture buildup that causes root diseases.
  • More orderly fields, with straight rows and easy access for field work and harvest.

Case studies

  • Mexico, Michoacán region (2024): by installing 37 L square pots, a grower reduced installation time by 25% thanks to the SQ system, while also improving the uniformity of the substrate's initial hydration.
  • Peru, Ica region (2025): a grower with more than 100 ha in production, using mostly round pots and a smaller proportion of square pots, faced a windstorm in July known as the “Paracas winds”. The impact was devastating: more than 30% of the round pots tipped over, causing plant losses and stress on the teams. In contrast, the square pots showed minimal, almost no damage, confirming in practice their superior stability against strong gusts.

These results reflect not only operational efficiency, but also financial peace of mind, since a stable field makes it possible to forecast harvest volumes with certainty in the medium term.

Conclusion: toward a blueberry factory

Agriculture is not a linear recipe: each grower weighs different agronomic criteria and may choose round or square pots. However, when the goal is to build a blueberry factory (orderly, stable and productive), the POTHU®️ SQ square pot is the most reliable option.
